LOFT SPACE Probably the largest space available to you to build your layout. Although space is plentiful, lighting and heat need to be added to make running your masterpiece comfortable. Loft space must be floor boarded before starting on any project as a foot through the ceiling usually brings fire and brimstone from the beloved and ridicule from the locals in the pub. A cheap and easy boarding is available from B&Q and is sold in packs you can actually get into your car without having to have your window wound down and 4 foot of floorboard flapping in the breeze. Once the flooring is down you can start work on the baseboard. My own personal layout is in the loft and the boards are screwed down to 3x2 batons which are in turn screwed to the roof rafters.
BEDROOM Be aware that having a railway layout in the master bedroom does not constitute marital bliss, a spare bedroom is infinitely preferable. An adequate layout can be built and run but provision must be made if the bedroom is used to sleep visitors - or a member of the family.
GARAGE Good place if you don’t have a car to plan around., although even that can be overcome by building the baseboard into a hoist mechanism to lift it out of the way when not in use.
GARDEN SHED Many beautiful garden layouts start and finish in a garden shed. Security must be a high factor in this age of crime if you are to be guaranteed continued pleasure from you hard work.
CELLAR Most cellars are damp and dark, lighting and heating would have to be installed in many cases before work could commence on the layout
