Card Building Kits
With the abundance of trackside buildings available these days part of the planning stage should be given over to choosing the era of the layout. Which ever age you finally decide upon you will have no problem obtaining period stations, houses, factories, or farm buildings. Authenticity however is entirely down to the designer, if you want The Mallard arriving at Ashford International Tunnel Terminal, who am I to argue. Card kits whilst seemingly cheap and nasty are really quite realistic and also provide a sense of “I made it myself” as opposed to click together plastic kits. The picture below shows a Metcalfe Goods Shed card kit built by me on top and the Metcalfe picture below.
Whether you go for card or plastic kits you will need some essential tools to help you on your way.
- Cutting Mat
- Steel Ruler
- Modellers Knife
- Glue
- Assorted colour felt tip pens.
- Small nail file or emery board.
- Clear tape
- Thin masking Tape

Plastic Building Kits
These come from many different manufacturers and are on the whole excellent kits. Some need more experience than others so sound advice would be to start small and work upward
The following pictures show various models from different manufacturers.
